Safer Estrogen for Vaginal Dryness and Urinary Symptoms?

Estriol, which has been used in our practice for 20 years, has been studied and reported on in an issue of Menopause, The Journal of the North American Menopause Society, Vol 11, 2004. Estrogen usage has been taking a beating lately, but all estrogens are not the same!!! Estriol is a safe, gentler form of estrogen and has been used in Europe for over 30 years. It is available from certain compounding pharmacies. It improves blood supply to the vaginal and urinary tissue thereby decreasing vaginal dryness, urinary frequency, burning and infections. It keeps the vulvo-vaginal tissue elastic, healthy and supple. Please call the office for a menopause second opinion if you are interested or ask your physician about estriol. Estriol is felt to be safe even for women with a history of breast cancer.

Estriol is being studied clinically in women with MS. It may be the estrogen of choice in those women.
