Facial weakness (drooping/sagging) is normally caused by either a stroke, or Bell's Palsy. Bell's Palsy accounts for 70% of all cases (which is 25 cases per 100,000 people per year), with both sexes being affected equally. Though 75% of all untreated patients recover fully after 2 weeks, an affected person should see a physician immediately. Through some very simple tests of facial movement, the physician will decide on the type of treatment. In most cases, prednisone will be prescribed. If no improvement is seen in the first 1 - 2 weeks, surgery may be required to reduce pressure on certain facial nerves. For more info, see the New England Journal of Medicine, September 23, 2004.
