For Dysmenorrhea (severe menstrual abdominal muscle cramps), 85% of all women use over-the-counter medication (like acetaminophen) and do not seek physician help. A study was completed recently of 350 women, ages 18 - 50 testing an abdominal heat wrap versus acetaminophen. The results showed a 20% increase in pain relief and a 15% reduction in muscle tightness using just the heat wrap. A similar study has also been completed using ibuprofen, gave similar results. The heat wrap used was Proctor & Gamble's Thermacare Heat Wrap, which is claimed to be discreet, comfortable and consistent in temperature. There was no cost comparison given.
