Hot Flashes are the most common menopause symptom. The Oct 7, 2004 issue of NEJM has a promising article about hot flashes and hypertension (high blood pressure). Completing test studies has been difficult because hot flashes are so inconsistent. But the University of California has been conducting long duration sleep/stress tests on women approximately 40 50 years old. They have seen cases where even during sleep, women with high blood pressure experience a sudden major drop in blood pressure. The body responds by a rapid increase in heart rate, which leads to a rise in body temperature and sweating. This has been duplicated by having the women inhale amyl nitrate (which also causes the heart rate to rapidly speed up). New tests are under way to see if by controlling blood pressure and heart rate through medication is possible. For more info, see www.nejm.org.
