In December, the FDA approved the use of the new Exablate 2000 system. It uses high frequency ultrasound waves to generate heat within the fibroid to kill it. The system also has an MRI unit to accurately locate the fibroid and to monitor the heat generated by the ultrasound. No surgery or anesthetic is required. Patients have reported 1 1/2 days missed work as opposed to the usual 3 weeks for a hysterectomy. Though long term results are not known, the system does show promise for certain fibroid types.
