Family History--More Important Than Ever

Heart disease
Strokes
Clots such as DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis)
or PE (Pulmonary Embolism)
Breast Cancer
Colorectal Cancer
Ovarian Cancer
Suicide
Depression
Asthma
Osteoporosis

These conditions run in families. They are genetic in some cases.

Did you know that knowing your family history of the above conditions could help define your risks?

According to an editorial in the NEJM Nov 4, 2004, The Surgeon General and Dept of Health and Human Services designated Thanksgiving Day as National Family History Day. A special web site is now available for your to download a family history to give your physicians: www.hhs.gov/familyhistory.

Take the time to be aware. Know your risks and ask for preventive information. There are so many diseases we can't control but the ones we can we should!!

NOTE: rarely a woman carries a hereditary factor which predisposes her to a blood clot which can lead to a DVT (deep vein thrombosis, usually in the leg), a PE (pulmonary embolism; clot in lung) strokes or other serious complications. If you have a history of any of these, you should NOT be on hormonal contraceptives and posssibly hormone therapy. If you have a family history of any of these conditions, tell us at once so we may do blood tests to screen you for the presence of the factors. If you would like to be screened even without the presence any risk factors, please discuss it with your physician. Your insurance may or may not want to pay for the tests in this case, but we will try to help you.
