Fosomax and jaw bone necrosis

This week's New England Journal has an excellent article on the big controversy regarding jaw necrosis in patients on bisphosphonates (Fosomax is an oral version). The cases which are few, involved intravenous (injections) of potent bisphpsphonates to patients being treated for cancer related conditions. It is not advisable to stop your oral bisphosphonate (Boniva, Actonel, Fosomax) based on the few cases that were reported. The review is very good. If one is having a big dental surgery and is worried, it can be temporarily stopped but due to the long half-life of these meds, it is unlikely to change anything. The benefit of preventing a spine or hip fracture greatly outweighs the theoretical risk of a jaw problem. Do not let your dentist intimidate you or make you sign a waiver if you are on one of the meds. This is nothing but a misrepresentation of the anecdotal reports. Please call the office if you have a question on this matter. We can assist you in finding a dentist who has the facts correct!!
